Widescope developed a bespoke online beach hut booking system for Blyth Community Enterprise Centre, helping customers book beach huts online while giving staff a clearer, faster way to manage availability, payments and seasonal rentals.
The system was built around the organisation’s real operational requirements rather than forcing staff to adapt to an off-the-shelf booking platform. It combines live booking calendars, custom hire rules, online payment integration, automated emails and a secure administration area.
Customers can view availability, choose a beach hut, select suitable dates and complete their booking online. Behind the scenes, staff can manage bookings, block unavailable dates, review payment status and monitor occupancy from a purpose-built admin system.

Project overview
The project involved the design and development of a custom PHP and MySQL booking platform for managing multiple beach huts. The system needed to support different hire types, prevent double bookings, handle customer details, process online payments and give staff a reliable way to manage bookings day to day.
Unlike a standard booking plugin, the platform was built around the rules of the service, including different booking durations, seasonal rentals, hut-specific settings and the need to clearly separate customer-facing availability from internal administration.

Custom booking rules
One of the most important parts of the project was the ability to support different booking types and operational rules. The system was developed to handle:

- Two weekday bookings: with specific weekday start rules
- Weekend bookings: managed around defined weekend availability
- Weekly bookings: with controlled start days
- Eight-month seasonal rentals: for longer-term winter hire
- Nine-month seasonal rentals: for extended seasonal use
- Blocked dates: allowing staff to mark huts as unavailable internally

Online payment integration
The booking system was integrated with SumUp so customers can pay online through a hosted checkout process. This helps reduce manual payment handling and creates a smoother booking journey from availability check through to payment.
Payment status is tracked in the administration system so staff can see whether a booking is pending, awaiting payment, paid, cancelled, blocked or expired. This gives the organisation better visibility and reduces the need to reconcile bookings manually.
